About Neptune's Staircase
Neptune's Staircase is a flight of eight locks on the Caledonian Canal at Banavie, about 5 km from Fort William town centre. Designed by engineer Thomas Telford and built between 1803 and 1822, it raises boats by about 20 metres over just over 400 metres. It is the largest lock flight in Britain.
The Caledonian Canal cuts across Scotland from Fort William to Inverness via the Great Glen, linking Lochy, Oich and Ness by canal sections, totalling roughly 97 km. It was opened so ships could avoid the hazardous waters around the north of Scotland, and today it is mainly used by pleasure craft and yachts.
The locks operate with wooden gates worked by the lock-keepers, and a boat’s passage through the whole flight takes about 90 minutes. Walking along the banks beside the locks gives views of Ben Nevis in the distance on clear days. The Great Glen Way follows the canal bank.
The site is free to walk around. Boat traffic is greater from spring to autumn.
