The city
Canterbury is the city of the mother cathedral of the Anglican Church, in Kent, about 95 km from London. The medieval centre, with walls, the Westgate gate, timber-framed houses and the River Stour, houses the cathedral where Thomas Becket was murdered, the Abadia de Santo Agostinho and the church of São Martinho, all World Heritage sites. It is the starting point of the Via Francígena and a base for visiting Dover.
