About Dark Hedges

A Dark Hedges is an avenue of beech trees on Bregagh Road, near the village of Armoy, about 17 km from Bushmills. The trees were planted in the 18th century by the Stuart family to impress visitors arriving at Gracehill mansion, and the branches grew curved and intertwined, forming a tunnel over the road.

The place became known worldwide as the King's Road in Game of Thrones, and began to receive many visitors. To protect the trees the road was closed to car traffic, and visits are made on foot; there is parking nearby at the Dark Hedges Estate, which usually has facilities. The beeches, more than 250 years old, are at the end of their natural cycle, and several have already fallen in storms or been removed for safety, which has slightly changed the appearance of the tunnel.

A local legend speaks of a lady in grey who would walk among the trees at dusk. Around it, the Antrim countryside has pastures and stone walls.

Access on foot is free. The road is narrow and, even without cars, receives many tour groups.
