About Belfast City Hall
City Hall is Belfast’s town hall and occupies Donegall Square in the city centre. It was built between 1898 and 1906, when Belfast had been granted city status and was growing through linen and shipbuilding, and the design by Alfred Brumwell Thomas, in white Portland stone and Edwardian Baroque style, intended to display that wealth. The central dome, clad in green copper, is 53 metres high and is visible from several streets in the centre.
Guided tours take in the Italian marble foyer, the main staircase, the reception hall and the council chamber, with oak benches, where councillors meet. The stained glass commemorates events and people of the city. On the ground floor, an exhibition tells the story of Belfast from medieval times to the present, with objects and accounts.
In the gardens there are statues, such as that of Queen Victoria, and the Jardim Memorial do Titanic, with a plaque bearing the names of the victims of the sinking, opened in 2012. In winter the square in front usually hosts the Christmas market.
Guided tours are generally offered several times a day, free of charge, and the exhibition is open to the public; check ahead. The building may close for official events.
