About Palácio e Jardins de Monserrate
Monserrate passed through several English owners. At the end of the 18th century the writer William Beckford lived there, and later the property was bought by merchant Francis Cook, who commissioned the current palace in 1858, designed by the architect James Knowles.
The palace blends Gothic, Indian and Moorish references, with a red dome, lace-like arches and slender columns. Inside, the halls and corridors are decorated in plaster and marble.
The garden, organized by world regions, brings together plants from Mexico, Australia, Japan and other places, with giant ferns, palm trees, lakes and a waterfall. Along the way there is the ruin of a chapel covered in vegetation.
Monserrate is about 4 km from Sintra's center, on the road to Colares, and usually has fewer visitors than the Pena and the Regaleira.
