About Azenhas do Mar
Azenhas do Mar is a small village in the concelho of Sintra, on the northern coast of the hills, near Colares. The white houses descend the slope of a cliff down to the sea.
The name comes from the azenhas, water-powered mills that once existed on the course of the stream that flows there.
At the base of the cliff, among the rocks, there is an ocean pool that fills with seawater and a small beach that appears at low tide.
The roadside viewpoint above the village gives the most famous view of the place, with the houses fitted into the rock and the sea breaking below. The village has fish and seafood restaurants, and is a few kilometers from Praia da Adraga and Praia das Maçãs.
