About Igreja Matriz de Vila do Conde
The parish church of Vila do Conde, dedicated to São João Baptista, is one of the best-known examples of the Manueline style in northern Portugal. Construction began in 1496 with the Basque architect João Rainho. In 1502, King D. Manuel I stayed in Vila do Conde on his way to Santiago de Compostela, and the Crown began funding the work.
The most important phase took place between 1511 and 1514 under the direction of the architect João de Castilho, born in Cantabria. He is responsible for the main portal, with the image of São João Baptista and finely carved stone decoration, the columns and arches that separate the naves, the choir and the main chapel with ribbed vaulting.
The interior has three naves, side chapels added later and gilded altars. The bell tower, beside the church, is a later addition. In front of it stands the pelourinho, a symbol of municipal autonomy.
The church has been a National Monument since 1910 and continues to function as a parish.
