About Forte de São João Baptista
The fort of São João Baptista, also called the fort of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, stands on the north bank at the mouth of the Ave River, where the river meets the Atlantic. It was built to defend the bar and the port of Vila do Conde from pirate and corsair attacks, at a time when the town’s shipyards were important for Portuguese navigation.
The plan is pentagonal, with five pentagonal bastions at the corners, in the style of Vauban fortifications. Two bastions face inland and three face the sea, and three of them have stone guardhouses. The walls are made of sloping ashlar masonry. The last bastion, Santa Bárbara, was not finished until 1793.
Inside, around the parade ground, are the command house, the barracks, the powder magazine and the storehouse, with a cistern in the centre. Ramps at the corners led artillery up to the bastions.
The seafront promenade runs beside the fort and continues north along the shore.
