About Casa de José Régio
José Régio, the pen name of José Maria dos Reis Pereira, was one of Portugal’s leading 20th-century writers: a poet, novelist and playwright, and one of the founders of the magazine Presença in Coimbra. He was born in Vila do Conde in 1901 in a house on Avenida Campos Henriques and died in 1969.
The house-museum is next to the house where he was born. It belonged to the family, and the writer spent his holidays there until he settled there permanently in 1966 after retiring from teaching in Portalegre. The three-storey building dates from the late 19th century.
After his death the municipal council bought the property and opened the house to the public in 1975. The exhibition shows the bedroom, the study and the library, and part of the large collection of art that Régio assembled during his life, with religious images, pieces of popular art and contemporary artworks organised by his brother, the painter Júlio.
It is a short visit, aimed at those interested in Portuguese literature.
