About Alfândega Régia e Nau Quinhentista

The Alfândega Régia stands on the quay of the Ave River, where Vila do Conde's shipyards operated for centuries. The building was erected at the beginning of the 16th century, during the reign of D. Manuel I, to control the port's trade, which in the Age of Discoveries supplied ships and sailors for Portuguese voyages.

Today the Alfândega houses the shipbuilding museum, which explains how wooden boats were built in the town, the tools of the ship carpenters and the port's role in maritime trade. The tradition of wooden shipyards continued until the 20th century.

Mooring alongside on the quay is the 16th-century nau, a replica of a Portuguese ship built in the town using traditional techniques. The visit goes through the decks, the holds and the cargo area, recreating life on board during long voyages.

The two sites often offer a joint visit. From the quay you can see the Ave riverbank, the bridge and, above, the mosteiro de Santa Clara.
