About Igreja de São Francisco

The Igreja de São Francisco was built in the 14th century by Franciscan friars, near the river. From the outside, the façade is Gothic and austere, with a rose window.

Inside, almost all the walls, columns and vaults were covered with gilded woodcarving in the 17th and 18th centuries. The ensemble is considered one of the richest examples of Baroque woodcarving in Portugal.

One of the best-known pieces is the Tree of Jesse, a polychrome and gilded wooden sculpture that shows Christ's genealogy from Jesse, father of King David.

The church is no longer used for worship and serves as a monument. The visit includes a museum of sacred art and the catacombs, where ossuaries and tombs of brothers of the Third Order are located. It stands next to the Palácio da Bolsa.
