About Igreja de Santa Maria
The Igreja de Santa Maria stands in Óbidos’s main square, next to the pelourinho. It was built on the site of an earlier temple and was renovated several times, especially in the 16th century.
The interior has walls lined with 17th-century blue-and-white azulejos with geometric patterns, and a painted ceiling. The altar and chapels contain paintings by Josefa de Óbidos, a 17th‑century painter who lived in the village and is one of the few women artists recognized in Portugal at that time.
In 1441 the church hosted the marriage of King D. Afonso V to his cousin Isabel, when both were still children.
In the square in front stands the pelourinho, bearing the symbol of a fishing net, associated with Queen D. Leonor.
