This part of central Portugal, in the district of Leiria, brings together four very different stops within a few kilometers. Óbidos is a whole medieval village inside walls, with streets of white houses and flowers. Nazaré is a fishing village on the Atlantic, with a wide beach and a neighborhood on top of the cliff.

Inland are two of the country's most important monasteries, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Mosteiro de Alcobaça, founded in 1153, holds the tombs of D. Pedro I and Inês de Castro. The Mosteiro da Batalha was built to celebrate the victory at Aljubarrota in 1385, and has the Capelas Imperfeitas, which never received a roof.

In winter, the Praia do Norte in Nazaré often gets some of the biggest waves surfed in the world, due to an underwater canyon off the coast. From the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, atop the cliff, you can watch the surfers.

This destination brings together 4 cities: Óbidos, Alcobaça, Batalha, Nazaré.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

From May to September for the beach in Nazaré and for strolling Óbidos with long days. The big waves at Praia do Norte usually occur between October and March. In December, Óbidos typically sets up the Vila Natal. The monasteries can be visited year-round.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

In one day by car from Lisbon you can do Óbidos and one of the monasteries. With two days you can fit Nazaré, Alcobaça and Batalha at a relaxed pace.

Which city to stay in

Óbidos has accommodations inside the walls, even in the castle, and is quiet at night when the tour groups leave. Nazaré has more options, on the beach or in the Sítio, atop the cliff. Alcobaça and Batalha suit those who want to stay near the monasteries. Caldas da Rainha, next to Óbidos, is a larger town with a train station.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.

Frequently asked questions about Óbidos, Nazaré and Alcobaça

Can you do a day trip from Lisbon to Óbidos and Nazaré?

Yes, by car or an organized tour. Óbidos is about an hour from Lisbon, and Nazaré about 40 minutes further. Including Alcobaça and Batalha in the same day is rushed.

The biggest usually appear between October and March, when there are storms in the Atlantic. There is no set day; surfers follow the forecasts.

Which monasteries to visit?

Alcobaça, with the tombs of D. Pedro I and Inês de Castro, and Batalha, with the Capelas Imperfeitas. Both are World Heritage sites and are about 20 km apart.
