About Sítio da Nazaré e Santuário

The Sítio is the upper part of Nazaré, on top of the cliff. It is where devotion to Nossa Senhora da Nazaré began, linked to the legend of D. Fuas Roupinho, who in 1182 was said to have been saved from falling off the crag while riding, on a foggy morning, by invoking the Virgin.

The Ermida da Memória, a small chapel at the edge of the viewpoint, marks the site of the legend. Inside, the walls are covered with tiles that tell the story.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, on the main square, is a 17th–18th century church with a baroque façade, azulejos and gilded woodwork. It is a pilgrimage destination, especially in September.

The Miradouro do Suberco, next to the chapel, offers the most famous view of Nazaré, over the bay, the beach and the village.
