About Basílica da Estrela
The Basílica da Estrela was commissioned by Queen D. Maria I to fulfill a promise for the birth of an heir. Construction took place from 1779 to 1790. It was the first church in the world dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The façade has two bell towers and sculptures, and the white dome stands out in the western Lisbon skyline. Inside, the church is clad in gray, pink and yellow marbles. Queen D. Maria I's tomb is in the church.
One of the basilica's treasures is the nativity scene by sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro, with hundreds of cork and terracotta figures. A staircase leads to the terrace around the dome, offering views over the city and the river.
In front, the Jardim da Estrela, opened in the 19th century, features a lake, an iron bandstand, large trees and a café. The Elétrico 28 runs between the basilica and the garden.
