Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before you buy. From Lisbon it's about 2h30 by car on the A6 motorway, and about 1 hour from Évora. There are buses from Lisbon and Évora, and the regional Raiano train, between Entroncamento and Badajoz, stops at Elvas station, outside the walls. From Badajoz, in Spain, it's about 20 minutes by car. Confirm schedules before you set out.
How many days
A full day is enough for the historic center, the walls, the aqueduct and one of the forts. With one night you have time for both forts, the museums and sunset over the walls, and Elvas can be a stop on the way between Évora and Spain.
When to go
From March to May and from October to November temperatures are usually pleasant for walking and climbing the forts. In summer, from June to September, the Alentejo heat is strong at midday: schedule visits for the morning and late afternoon. In winter the days are short and mornings are cold.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Not needed for the historic center, the castle, the museums and the aqueduct, which are visited on foot. A car helps for Forte da Graça, on a hill north of the town, and to continue to Évora, Monsaraz or Spain. There is parking by the gates of the walls.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Elvas a World Heritage Site?
Because it brings together the largest ensemble of land bastion fortifications in the world, according to UNESCO: 17th-century star-shaped walls, the forts of Santa Luzia and da Graça, smaller fortifications and the Aqueduto da Amoreira. The ensemble was inscribed in 2012.
Can you visit Elvas as a day trip from Évora?
Yes. It's about 1 hour by car on the A6. In one day you can see the center, the castle, the aqueduct and one of the forts. There are few bus departures: check in advance.
