About Praia do Barril
Praia do Barril is at the western tip of the Ilha de Tavira, near Pedras d'El Rei and Santa Luzia, about 6 km from Tavira.
There used to be a tuna-fishing station there until the mid-20th century, with fishermen's houses. The houses were converted into restaurants and beach facilities.
The old anchors that were used to hold the tuna nets were lined up on the dunes, forming the anchor cemetery, one of the most photographed images of the eastern Algarve.
To reach the beach, you cross the ria via a footbridge from Pedras d'El Rei and continue on foot or on a small tourist train across the island.
