The city
A quiet town in the eastern Algarve, crossed by the Rio Gilão, with white houses, four-sloped roofs and more than twenty churches. The old bridge connects the two banks, and the castle and the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo sit on the hill. In the Ria Formosa, the Ilha de Tavira and Praia do Barril, with its anchor cemetery, are reached by boat or by tourist train. Nearby is Cacela Velha.
