Sea cave on the coast of Lagoa, with an opening in the roof through which light falls onto a small internal beach. Visited by boat or guided kayak; landing and access by swimming are prohibited.

About Algar de Benagil
Algar de Benagil is located beside the fishing village of Benagil, in the municipality of Lagoa, about 16 km from Albufeira. It is a large cavity carved by the sea into limestone, with two sea entrances and a circular opening in the roof.
Light enters through the opening and illuminates the small sand beach inside the cave. The scene has become one of the Algarve's most iconic images.
To protect the cave and regulate the large number of boats, local rules prohibit landing on the inner sand and approaching the cave by swimming or with inflatables, and require a guide for kayak trips. Visits are made by boat or guided kayak, without leaving the vessel.
Tours depart from Praia de Benagil, from Portimão, from Carvoeiro and from Albufeira. From above, a cliff path passes close to the roof opening.

Early in the morning, when the sea is calmer and there are fewer boats. Tours depend on sea conditions and are usually more frequent from April to October.
How to get there
Boats depart from Praia de Benagil, about 16 km from Albufeira, and also from Albufeira marina, from Carvoeiro and from Portimão. The road to Benagil is narrow and parking is limited.
Tip
Book the boat or kayak tour with a licensed company. Do not try to reach it by swimming: it is prohibited and the sea can be dangerous at the cave entrance.
