About Sete Cidades

The Sete Cidades are at the western end of São Miguel, inside a volcanic caldera about 5 km across. At the bottom of the crater lie the Lagoa Azul and the Lagoa Verde, separated by a bridge, and the village of Sete Cidades.

The difference in colour between the lakes comes from depth, vegetation and the reflection of the sky. A local legend tells of a princess and a shepherd whose tears, blue and green, are said to have formed the two lakes.

The Miradouro da Vista do Rei, on the rim of the crater, gives the best-known view of the two lakes. The name recalls the visit of King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia in 1901.

Trails run along the crater rim and the lake shores, and there are also the Lagoa de Santiago and the Lagoa do Canário, near the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno.
