About Portas da Cidade
The Portas da Cidade were built in 1783 next to the old quay, and were the entrance to Ponta Delgada for those arriving by sea.
The ensemble has three arches, of dark basaltic stone and white limestone, with the coat of arms of Portugal and that of the city. With land reclamation and the construction of the waterfront avenue in the 20th century, they were moved a few meters to their current location.
The gates are in Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral, named for the navigator linked to the discovery of the Açores, whose statue stands in the square.
Behind them is the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, and around it the streets of the center, with the black-and-white Portuguese pavement.
