About Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião
The Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião was built from the early 16th century, after Ponta Delgada became a town, and expanded in the following centuries.
The main portal, Manueline in style, was made of white limestone brought from the mainland, which contrasts with the dark basalt of the walls, characteristic of Azorean architecture.
Inside, the church has baroque gilded woodcarving on the altars and the chancel, old images and a sacristy with exotic wood furniture.
The church stands next to the Portas da Cidade in central Ponta Delgada and is the reference point for the surrounding streets. The black-and-white paving of the square in front completes the ensemble.
