About Furnas e Parque Terra Nostra
The Furnas are in a volcanic valley on the east of São Miguel, about 45 km from Ponta Delgada. In the centre of the village, calderas release steam and boiling water, and there are dozens of mineral springs with different tastes.
On the shore of the Lagoa das Furnas, fumaroles heat the ground, and this is where the cozido das Furnas is prepared: pots of meat, sausages and vegetables are buried in the hot ground in the morning and removed at lunchtime.
The Parque Terra Nostra began in 1775 with the summer house of the American consul Thomas Hickling. The garden, with thousands of plant species, lakes and tree ferns, features in its centre a large thermal pool of iron-rich water, yellowish in colour.
Near the village are also the Poça da Dona Beija, with smaller thermal pools, and the Ermida de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias on the edge of the lake.
