About Chá Gorreana
Gorreana is on the north coast of São Miguel, near Maia, about 30 km from Ponta Delgada. The tea plantation has been operating since 1883 and is considered the oldest continuously producing tea plantation in Europe.
Tea was introduced to the Azores in the 19th century, and Chinese technicians came to teach cultivation and processing. The humid, mild climate and volcanic soil favour the plant.
In the factory, old machines, some from the early 20th century, still dry, roll and sort the leaves to make black and green tea. The visit is self-guided and ends with a tea tasting.
The fields, with rows of tea bushes descending towards the sea, can be walked via short trails.
