About Musée littéraire Victor Hugo (Casa de Victor Hugo)
Victor Hugo, the author of Les Misérables, spent much of his life in exile for opposing Napoleon III and visited Luxembourg several times. In 1871, after the events of the Paris Commune, he was expelled from Belgium and settled in Vianden for about two and a half months, in a house beside the bridge over the Our, on the Luxembourg side.
The house was turned into a literary museum dedicated to the writer’s stay in Vianden and his connections with the country. The exhibition brings together letters, documents, drawings made by him, early editions, photographs and period objects, and reconstructs the room where Hugo worked, with the window facing the river and the castle, which he drew in ruins.
During his stay Hugo wrote part of L'Année Terrible and walked around the town, where he became known among the locals. The museum texts are usually in French, German and English, and there is an audio guide.
On the bridge, in front of the house, there is a bust of Victor Hugo made by Auguste Rodin. It’s about a 15-minute uphill walk from the house to the castle.
