About General Patton Memorial Museum (Museu Patton)
Ettelbruck, the neighboring town of Diekirch, was liberated in September 1944 and later hit again during the Battle of the Bulge, when units of the U.S. Third Army, commanded by General George S. Patton, came from the south to halt the German offensive. The town preserves that memory in a museum and in a statue of the general, in the square that bears his name.
The General Patton Memorial Museum brings together photographs, documents, uniforms, weapons, equipment and everyday objects of soldiers and civilians, and tells the story of the occupation of Luxembourg, the liberation and the fighting of the winter of 1944–45 in the Sûre valley and the north of the country.
The museum is smaller than the one in Diekirch and more focused on Ettelbruck and the figure of Patton, who is buried in the Cemitério Americano de Luxemburgo, near the capital. Visits are usually quick and can be combined with Diekirch and Bourscheid on the same day.
The statue of Patton stands in the square named for the general at the town entrance. Ettelbruck has a train station on the main northern line, which makes visiting without a car easy.
