About Château de Bourscheid (Castelo de Bourscheid)

Bourscheid Castle occupies a rocky spur above a bend in the Sûre River, about 150 metres above the valley, a few kilometres from Diekirch. The first buildings date from around the year 1000, and the castle grew through the 14th and 15th centuries, with an outer curtain wall and several towers surrounding the upper castle.

Gradually abandoned after the 17th century, the castle fell into ruin, and in 1972 the Luxembourg state took it over and began excavations and restoration. Today it is one of the country's most extensive groups of medieval ruins, with walls, gates, towers and the Stolzembourg, the restored 14th‑century house within the enclosure.

The visit is on foot along paths, stairs and walkways between the ruins, with an audio guide that explains life in the castle. From the towers there are views over the Sûre valley, the Ardennes forest and the riverside beach of Bourscheid‑Plage below.

At night the castle is illuminated and can be seen from the valley road. On some summer weekends there are usually medieval events.
