About Torre dei Lamberti
The Torre dei Lamberti began to be built in 1172 by the family of the same name. The lower, older part alternates bands of brick and tuff stone. A lightning strike destroyed the top in 1403, and the reconstruction, completed around 1464, gave the tower an octagonal bell chamber with Gothic windows.
Up there are two bells from 1295 that still exist: the Rengo, the larger bell, which summoned the city council and the soldiers, and the Marangona, the smaller bell, which warned of fires and marked the beginning and end of the working day. The clock was added at the end of the 18th century.
The tower has been open to the public since 1972. An elevator climbs most of the way, and the rest is by steps. From the top, at 84 meters, the view includes Piazza delle Erbe, the Arena, the bends of the Ádige and the Torricelle hills. The entrance is through the courtyard of the Palazzo della Ragione, the Cortile Mercato Vecchio, with its red marble staircase.
