About Teatro Romano e Museo Archeologico

The Teatro Romano of Verona was built in the 1st century BC on the left bank of the Ádige, taking advantage of the slope of the morro de San Pietro. It is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in northern Italy. In the Middle Ages houses and churches were built on top of it, and excavations only exposed it from the 19th century onward.

Today you can see the semicircular seating, remains of the stage and the stairways that climbed the slope. The small church of Santi Siro e Libera, dating from the 10th century, remained in the middle of the seating and is still there.

At the top, in the former convent of San Girolamo, is the Museo Archeologico al Teatro Romano, with mosaics, statues, inscriptions and glass from Roman Verona. From the cloister and the windows you can see the river and the historic center on the opposite bank.

Since 1948, in summer the theatre hosts the Estate Teatrale Veronese, a festival of theatre, dance and music, with Shakespeare plays among the productions.
