About Duomo di Verona
The Duomo di Verona, officially the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is the city's main church and a national monument. It stands on the bend of the Ádige, in the north of the historic center, in a complex that includes the bishop's palace, the canons' cloister, the Biblioteca Capitolare, the baptistery and the church of Sant'Elena.
The façade is Romanesque, from the 12th century, with a portal guarded by stone lions and statues of the paladins Orlando and Oliveiro, heroes of the Charlemagne legends. The interior was rebuilt in the Gothic style, with three naves and side chapels framed by painted columns.
In the first chapel on the left is Titian's Assumption of the Virgin, from the 16th century. Through the cloister you reach the baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, with an octagonal baptismal font carved from a block of marble, and Sant'Elena, where remains of the first Christian church on the site and 4th-century floor mosaics can be seen.
