About Castel San Pietro
The morro de San Pietro has been occupied since before the Romans and had a Visconti castle at the end of the 14th century. The building seen today at the top is a barracks built by the Austrians between 1852 and 1858, over the remains of older walls. The building is not open to visitors, but the square in front and the terrace are open to the public.
From the panoramic terrace you can see the Ádige curving beneath the Ponte Pietra, the Duomo, the church towers, the Torre dei Lamberti and, in the distance, the Arena. It is the most photographed viewpoint in Verona, especially at the end of the afternoon.
There are two ways up. On foot, a stairway starts from the Teatro Romano side and takes about 15 minutes. Or by funicular: the inclined lift, whose first version dates from 1941, climbs in just over a minute and runs year-round, with extended hours in summer. Many people go up by funicular and come down on foot via the stairway.
