About Basilica di Santa Anastasia

The Basilica di Santa Anastasia is Verona's largest church and the city's main example of Gothic architecture. It was built by the Dominican friars from the late 13th century, with support from the Scaligeri and the Castelbarco family, near the point where the Ádige is crossed by the Ponte Pietra. The brick façade remained unfinished, with only the marble portal.

Inside, three tall naves are separated by red marble columns, and the ceiling is painted with flowers and leaves. In the first two columns are the holy-water basins supported by the gobbi, figures of men bent under the weight of the basin. There are also chapels of noble families with tombs and frescoes.

The most famous work is high in the Pellegrini chapel, above the arch: the fresco of Saint George and the Princess, painted by Pisanello around 1433–1438, with horses, dogs and the city in the background. Today only a part is visible, but the detail of the animals and the clothing is one of the highlights of Italian Gothic painting.
