About Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli
The Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli sits on the plain about 4 kilometers from the center of Assis, near the train station. It was built between 1569 and 1679 to protect the sites most connected with Francisco's life, following a design by Galeazzo Alessi. The dome dominates the plain, and the façade bears a gilded statue of Our Lady at the top.
In the center of the church, beneath the dome, is the Porziuncola, a small stone chapel that Francisco restored and where he gathered the first friars. It was there that Clare received the habit in 1211 or 1212, and where the Franciscan order was born. Above the door is a 14th-century painting that depicts the Forgiveness of Assisi.
Behind, to the right, is the Cappella del Transito, the old infirmary where Francisco died on 3 October 1226, lying on the floor as he had asked. Beside it, the Roseto preserves the rose garden of thornless roses connected to a tradition from the saint's life.
The adjoining convent houses a museum and the Chapel of the Roses. Many pilgrimages start or finish here, and the walking route up to the hill town is traditional.
