About Basilica di Santa Chiara
The Basilica di Santa Chiara was built between 1257 and 1265 to house the body of Clare of Assisi, the young noblewoman who followed Francis and founded the order of the Poor Clares. It sits at the eastern tip of the town, on a square overlooking the valley, where the church of San Giorgio — Francis's first burial place — once stood.
The façade features bands of white and pink stone from Monte Subasio, a large rose window and broad lateral arches; the buttresses were added later to support the church. The interior is a single nave, with few traces of medieval painting.
In the Cappella del Crocifisso is the painted crucifix that stood in the little church of San Damiano. According to tradition, it was before this crucifix that Francis heard the call to rebuild the Church. In the crypt, reached by descending from the nave, rests the body of St. Clare, and there are also relics of hers and of Francis, such as habits and personal objects.
The basilica is cared for by the Poor Clares, who live in cloister in the monastery next door. The atmosphere is contemplative, and silence is requested throughout the visit.
