About Teatro romano di Aosta

The teatro romano in Aosta was built a few decades after the town’s foundation, in the 1st century, in the northeast corner of the Roman town, near the Porta Praetoria. Together with the amphitheatre, which stood beside it and is now hidden among buildings, it formed the entertainment area of Augusta Praetoria.

What stands out is the southern façade, which still stands at 22 meters high. It is a stone wall with buttresses and four levels of openings: the entrance arcades at the bottom and, above them, three rows of windows of different shapes. The height and structure have suggested the theatre may have had a roof, which would be unusual.

Inside the enclosure the semicircular seating could hold between 3,500 and 4,000 spectators, and parts of it remain, along with the orchestra and the stage wall. In summer the theatre again hosts performances and concerts.

The mountains surrounding Aosta appear through the façade’s windows, making the theatre one of the most photographed spots in the town.
