About Area megalitica di Saint-Martin-de-Corléans
The megalithic area of Saint-Martin-de-Corléans is located in the neighbourhood of the same name on the west outskirts of Aosta. It was discovered in 1969 during construction work, and excavations revealed a site used for millennia, from the end of the Neolithic to the Bronze Age.
The site preserves traces of a foundation ritual, with plough furrows and seeds, alignments of wooden posts, wells with offerings and, above all, a group of anthropomorphic stelae: stone slabs carved with stylized human figures showing arms, belts, weapons and clothing. Later, the place became a necropolis, with stone tombs like dolmens and a triangular platform.
The entire site has been covered by a large pavilion that also serves as a museum. The visit follows walkways over the excavations, with the structures in situ, and rooms with the original stelae, reconstructions and videos that explain what each find means.
Next to it stands the church of Saint-Martin-de-Corléans, which gives its name to the neighbourhood.
