About Torre del Mangia
The Torre del Mangia was built between 1338 and 1348 as the civic tower of the Palazzo Pubblico. It is 87 meters tall, or 102 including the lightning rod, and was constructed in brick, with the light-stone crown designed from a project by Lippo Memmi. Its height was meant to show the strength of the Republic of Siena against noble families and the Church.
The name comes from the first bell-ringer, Giovanni di Balduccio, nicknamed Mangiaguadagni, roughly 'profit-eater', for spending everything he earned on food. The nickname became Mangia and stuck to the tower. At the top is the Campanone, the great bell placed in the 17th century, which rings on festive occasions and during the Palio.
The climb is on foot, about 400 steps in narrow stairways, with no elevator. From the top you can see Piazza del Campo in its shell shape, the roofs of Siena, the Duomo and the hills around the city.
The tower has a maximum daily capacity, and tickets sell out when it is reached. It closes in bad weather. Under-14s may only ascend accompanied by an adult, and the climb is not recommended for those with heart or respiratory problems, vertigo or claustrophobia.
