About Torre di Pisa

The Torre di Pisa is the cathedral's bell tower. Construction began in 1173 and, a few years later, when the first floors were complete, the soft ground of clay and sand gave way on one side and the tower began to lean. Work stopped for almost a century and, when it resumed, the builders tried to compensate for the lean by making the upper floors slightly crooked in the opposite direction. The bell was only installed in the 14th century.

The tower has eight levels, with marble-arched galleries, and is about 56 meters high. Between 1990 and 2001 it was closed for stabilization work that removed earth beneath the higher side and reduced the lean slightly, without straightening it.

The climb is on foot, up a spiral staircase of 251 steps inside the wall, with uneven and slippery steps worn by centuries. The visit lasts about 30 minutes and begins with a brief explanation of the tower's history. Up top, the view covers the square, Pisa's roofs and, on clear days, the surrounding mountains.

Children under 8 do not climb, and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The visit is not recommended for people with heart or mobility problems.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

The ascent and descent take about 30 minutes, but arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time to leave bags in the cloakroom and pass through the metal detector.

Best time

The early morning and late afternoon time slots are usually the most sought after for the light. In high season, from June to August, buy in advance because time slots sell out.

How to get there

It is located in the Piazza dei Miracoli, about 2 km from Pisa Centrale station and a few minutes' walk from Pisa San Rossore station. The tower's entrance is on the lawn itself, next to the cathedral.

Tip

Tickets have a fixed time and being late means you lose the visit with no refund. Bags and backpacks stay in the cloakroom. Bring ID for children: the minimum age of 8 is checked at the entrance.
