About Rocca di Cefalù

The Rocca di Cefalù is the 268‑metre limestone promontory rising just behind the town. It was inhabited and fortified since Antiquity, and locals call it castieddu, the castle, because of the medieval ruins at the top.

The trail starts in the historic center at the Salita Saraceni and climbs by steps and stone paths between old walls. Halfway up is the Tempio di Diana, a megalithic construction of stone blocks whose oldest part dates to the 9th century BC, linked to pre‑Christian cults and remodeled in the 2nd century BC. Higher up are remains of cisterns, ovens and the castle.

From the viewpoints you can see the cathedral from above, the rooftops of the center, the harbor and the coast as far as the ilhas Eólias on clear days. The climb to the Tempio di Diana takes about 40 minutes, and to the top about an hour.
