About Museo Archeologico Regionale Pietro Griffo
The Museo Archeologico Regionale Pietro Griffo stands above the Valle dei Templi, near the church of San Nicola, in a modern building opened in 1967. It brings together pieces from Akragas and Roman Agrigentum, and from other sites in central-southern Sicily such as Gela.
The best-known room houses an original telamon from the Tempio di Zeus Olimpio, a stone figure about seven and a half meters high, reassembled upright, with heads of other telamones beside it. It is the best way to grasp the size of the temple seen in ruins in the park.
The collection also includes painted Greek vases, including Attic crateras, the Efebo of Agrigento, a marble statue from the 5th century BC, coins, scale models of the temples and objects from the necropolises. Beside the museum are the church of San Nicola and the ekklesiasterion, the assembly place of the Greek city.
