About Villa dei Misteri
The Villa dei Misteri lies outside the walls of Pompeia, beyond the Porta Ercolano, at the end of the Via dos Sepulcros. It was a large country house with a residential area, terraces with sea views and a section for agricultural production, where wine was made.
The reason for its fame is the fresco room: a sequence of almost life-size figures painted on the red known as Pompeian red. The scenes show a rite of initiation linked to the cult of Dionysus, or Bacchus, and scholars still debate the exact meaning of each figure.
The villa is part of the suburban villas route of the Archaeological Park, together with the Villa di Diomede. Access is included with the ticket that covers the villas; visitors who buy only the ancient city ticket can complete the route at the Porta Ercolano entrance. Check the rules before you go.
