About Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario di Pompei
The shrine was built between 1876 and 1891 at the initiative of Bartolo Longo, a lawyer who settled in the Pompeia valley and promoted devotion to the Rosary. The modern town grew up around the church, which is the center of local life.
On the high altar is the painting of Our Lady of the Rosary, venerated by pilgrims from all over Italy. Twice a year, on 8 May and on the first Sunday in October, the Supplication to the Virgin draws crowds to the square in front.
The bell tower, separate from the church, is about 80 metres high and has an elevator to the terrace, from where you can see the town, the Vesúvio and the ruins. Around the Piazza Bartolo Longo there are cafés, pastry shops and the Trenitalia train station.
