About Quartieri Spagnoli
The Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish quarters) were laid out in the 16th century, when viceroy Pedro de Toledo opened the Via Toledo and ordered lodgings to be built for the Spanish soldiers on the adjacent hillside. The result is a grid of straight, narrow streets that climb toward the Vomero, with tall buildings, clotheslines crossing the alleys and small shrines on the corners.
It is a residential, working-class neighbourhood with small shops, trattorias and workshops, and life happens on the street. In recent years many visitors have started to come here to eat and to experience everyday city life.
In Largo Maradona, a small square in the neighbourhood, is the mural with Diego Maradona’s face, painted in 1990 when the Argentine led Napoli to its second Italian title. The place has become a gathering point for fans, with shirts, photos, scarves and tributes left by residents.
Via Toledo, which borders the neighbourhood, is Naples’ shopping street. Toledo metro station, decorated with blue mosaics in homage to the sea, is at the entrance to the neighbourhood.
