About Duomo di Napoli
The Duomo (cathedral) of Naples was built between the late 13th and early 14th centuries by the Angevin kings, over older churches. The neo-Gothic façade dates from the late 19th century; inside, the nave has a gilded wooden ceiling and paintings from several centuries.
The Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro, on the right side, is a Baroque chapel built as the city's vow after the plague and an eruption. It holds the saint's relics, including the ampoules with the blood that, according to tradition, liquefies three times a year: on the Saturday before the first Sunday in May, on 19 September and on 16 December. On those days the cathedral is very crowded.
On the left side you reach the basilica of Santa Restituta, the city's oldest church, and the baptistry of San Giovanni in Fonte, with 5th-century mosaics. The Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro next door displays jewels, silverware and the saint's mitre.
