About Cappella Sansevero

The Cappella Sansevero was the funerary chapel of the di Sangro family, princes of Sansevero. The form seen today was given in the 18th century by Raimondo di Sangro, an inventor, alchemist and Freemason, who commissioned the sculptures and closely oversaw the work.

In the center of the nave is the Veiled Christ, sculpted by Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753. Christ’s body lies beneath a veil of marble so thin it looks like wet fabric over the face and body. Around it are other marble sculptures, such as the Veiled Modesty (Pudicizia) by Antonio Corradini and the Disillusion (Desengano) by Francesco Queirolo, which includes a net carved in marble.

In the underground chamber are the so-called anatomical machines, two skeletons with the circulatory system reconstructed, tied to the prince’s mysterious reputation. The staircase down to it is narrow and spiral.

The chapel is small and very popular. Photos and videos are not allowed inside, and the museum notes that it usually closes on Tuesdays.
