About Piazzetta di Capri
The Piazzetta is what everyone calls Piazza Umberto I, the town centre of Capri, high on the island between the two ports. It is small, surrounded by cafés with outdoor tables, and serves as the island’s living room: it’s where locals, visitors and those who have just come up from the port meet.
The clock tower, with a ceramic dome, was the bell tower of an old cathedral. Beside it a flight of steps leads to the church of Santo Stefano, Baroque, from the late 17th century, with a marble floor taken from a Roman villa.
From the Piazzetta the narrow streets of the centre fan out, such as Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Camerelle, with designer shops, and the alleys that lead to the Giardini di Augusto, the Certosa di San Giacomo and the Villa Jovis trail. The funicular that rises from Marina Grande arrives a few steps away.
