About Giardini di Augusto
The Giardini di Augusto were created at the beginning of the 20th century by the German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp, who spent seasons in Capri. They were first called Jardins Krupp; later they took the name of the emperor Augusto, who owned property on the island.
They are terraced flower gardens with Mediterranean plants, benches and viewpoints. On one side you can see the line of the Faraglioni rising from the sea; on the other, the bay of Marina Piccola and the island's southern coast.
Just below the gardens is the Via Krupp, a zigzag path cut into the rock that descends to Marina Piccola. It was opened by Krupp and designed by the engineer Emilio Mayer, and is clearly visible from the viewpoints. The path is often closed due to rockfall risk: check before relying on it.
Next to the gardens is the Certosa di San Giacomo, a former Carthusian monastery from the 14th century.
