About Funicolare Como-Brunate

The Funicolare Como-Brunate has been operating since 1894 and links the lakeside in Como with the village of Brunate, at about 700 meters altitude. The ascent, along a steep track through vegetation and houses, takes only a few minutes and is part of the experience.

Brunate is nicknamed balcone delle Alpi, the balcony of the Alps. From the viewpoint near the upper station the view covers the city of Como, the first stretch of the lake and, on clear days, the mountains to the north. The village has early 20th-century villas and quiet streets.

A walk of about 20 to 30 minutes, uphill, leads from the station to San Maurizio and to the Faro Voltiano, a lighthouse built in 1927 for the centenary of Alessandro Volta's death. When open, you can climb the internal steps to the top for an even wider view.

There are trails that start from Brunate across the mountain; those who prefer can walk down to Como along paths.
