About Museum Gherdëina

The Museum Gherdëina, the museum of Val Gardena, was inaugurated in 1960 in the Cësa di Ladins, the cultural house built by the association of Ladins of the valley. The building also houses a library on Ladin culture and a theatre.

The collection begins with wood sculpture, a tradition that made Val Gardena famous. There are pieces from the 16th to the 20th century, including the original sculptures from the church of San Giacomo, the oldest in the valley, attributed to the Vinazer family, who dominated the craft for two centuries. One room displays old wooden toys made in the valley.

Another section deals with the nature of the Dolomites: minerals, fossils from the floor of an ancient sea, such as the ichthyosaur found at Seceda, alpine flora and fauna and archaeological finds from the valley. The museum also holds the archive of Luis Trenker, mountaineer, actor and director of mountain films born in Ortisei.
