About Lagazuoi
Lagazuoi has two summits: Piccolo Lagazuoi, at 2,778 meters, and Grande Lagazuoi, at 2,835. It lies west of Cortina, above Passo Falzarego, on the passage between the Ampezzo valley and the Val Badia.
Between 1915 and 1917 the mountain was on the front line between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Both sides dug tunnels inside Piccolo Lagazuoi and tried to blow up enemy positions with mines. Today the site is an open-air museum, with trenches, posts and galleries.
A cable car rises from Passo Falzarego, at 2,105 meters, in under 3 minutes to near Rifugio Lagazuoi, at 2,752 meters. From the terrace you can see the Tofane, the Marmolada, the Pelmo, the Civetta, the Sella and the Sassolungo. Experienced people can descend on foot through the war galleries, wearing a helmet and a light.
The cable car runs in the summer season, usually June to October, and in the ski season; check the dates before you go up.
